Instructions for Applying to State of CALIFORNIA

Despite popular opinion and despite the recent budget crisis, the State of California is always hiring! You simply need to know HOW to apply. Watch the Video Tutorials first before you go any further.

Before you Start – Individuals with Disabilities and Veterans of the Armed Forces have preferential treatment. If you fall in one or both, you need to file a separate application to be recognized by the state. Follow steps below to obtain eligibility status:

DISABLED?

If you have a documented disability, you could qualify for LEAP (Limited Employment Application Process). LEAP allows you to receive preference points, as well as give you the ability to apply to jobs that are especially saved for people with disabilities. For DETAILED information and instructions, visit the Official State of CA LEAP page but the summarized version is provided below. In order to qualify for LEAP follow the steps below:

  • Complete the LEAP application with your doctor’s assistance
  • Submit your LEAP application to State of CA Department of Rehab Office in your area.
  • When you search for positions in steps 2 below, use the word “LEAP” in your search criteria to see the recruitment open to disabled individuals.
VETERAN?

If you are a Veteran of the Armed Forces, you receive additional points added to any tests you take. Visit the Official State of California Veterans Information page for details. But below is the Summarized version:

  • Fill out the Veterans Preference Application Form
  • Have your DD214 Ready,
  • Mail Both to:
    California Department of Human Resources
    ATTN: Examination Unit
    1515 S Street
    Sacramento, CA 95811
  • Once approved, you will receive a letter, and your information will remain on file and the preference points will automatically be added to any State Exams you take (See below for Exam Details)

Step 1 – Create & Complete Your Profile (also referred to as STD-678)

  • Visit the Signup Page and click on CREATE A NEW PROFILE under the UserID box
  • Fill in all required information and make sure you write down and save your USER I.D. and Password.
  • Click on the LOGIN
  • On the next page, Enter your USER I.D. and Password to log in.
  • Click on each of the links for General Information, Education, Experience, etc.
  • Click on PRINT MY APPLICATION to generate the application form STD678 from the data you entered on all the pages.
  • Save the application for use in STEP 4 below.

Step 2 – Search For What Job Classifications That You Qualify For and TAKE EXAM

Step 3 – Take the Exam for Your Targeted Job Classification(s)

  • Attend the examination site and take the exam as instructed. Your results will be provided to you either onsite, or via mail. Your results will show your “ranking” , Rank 1, Rank 2, Rank 3, Rank 4, etc…
  • If you rank 1, 2, or 3, the state will automatically send you EMPLOYMENT INQUIRY notices for THAT job classification
  • NOTE: You must reply to the Employment Inquiry notices, or you may get removed from the list.
  • If you do not rank 1, 2, or 3, you will not receive any employment inquiries, so you will have to seek out the vacancies and apply by yourself (see next step).

Step 4 – Apply for the Job

Once you have passed the Examination for your targeted job classification, you may begin to search for vacancies as follows:

  • Go to the Main Page page and enter the job classification you are seeking in the JOB TITLE field and hit the SEARCH button.
  • Look in the JOB VACANCIES column and select the link for the available vacancies
  • Once you find a position that you like, Print out the job announcement. It will look like this:State of CA Vacancy
  • Review your from STEP 1 above, STD-678 application, and put the POSITION NUMBER in the box for “Examination Title”.
  • At the top of page 1, there are some boxes you need to fill in with your last name, SSN, etc. Combine all those letters and place them collectively on the box labeled EASYID
  • Print out the STD-678 application and sign the application and mail it to the Contact Name and Contact Address shown on the desired vacancy.
  • Congratulations: You have officially applied for a job with the State of California
